The name Montpellier was given to the settlement approximately in the year 985. this is based on a document found dating from around that time. In the tenth century Montpellier became a centre for international trade coming in from the Mediterranean sea. In 1213 the city was given to the kings of Aragon as a dowry because of a marriage between two prominent people. In the following centuries the city changed from owner a lot and after a lot of struggles on religious grounds it became an industrial centre in the 19th century and knew a enormous grew in the 1960s when French settlers from Algeria resettled in the city after Algeria became independent.

Nowadays it is a beatiful cathedral again, not only the outside porch looks great, the interior leaves nothing to your imagination. The best artworks inside are 17th-century canvasses in the transepts notably the work of a Huguenot, Montpellier-born Sébastien Bourdon, who painted himself among the "heathen" in The Fall of Simon Magnus.
